Report — Medical Waste Pyrolysis

Office of Science / NNSA

"The product gases are characteristic of pyrolysis found in prior studies, suggesting thereby that the unit is indeed a pyrolysis system."

"The Monarch Waste system is consequently anticipated to significantly reduce emissions of harmful atmospheric pollutants compared with incineration."

EPA Response

Based on the design and operation information you have provided to date, the feeder, pyrolysis tube and char vessel of the PyroMed™ Unit would not meet the definition of a HMIWI at 40 CFR §60.51c.

definition of HMIWI at 40 CFR §60.51c:

Hospital/medical/infectious waste incinerator or HMIWI or HMIWI unit means any device that combusts any amount of hospital waste and/or medical/infectious waste.

We base this on the SNL test, which states that the "evidence is sufficient to state that the system is a pyrolysis unit and produces primarily pyrolysis products, not products of combustion."
